Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP)

RESTORATIVE JUSTICE (PRISON MINISTRY)

The Rev. Bob Toll -- a former pastor at Golden First UMC -- is the Chaplain at Jefferson County's Detention Facility. Rev. Toll has specific needs for the Golden First UMC Prison Team to address, including a lack of current religious literature, Bibles, hymnals, and church school materials.

Golden First UMC has donated 40 older Methodist Hymnals and we help with the clothing bank. Prison Team members will continue to lead Bible studies and to participate in various types of prison ministry including the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program, or VORP. More information about VORP is available here [click].

The Prison Ministry Team- including Cynthia Bauman, Arlone Childs, Rev. Ross Kershaw, and Rev. Harold Rickard- will continue to work closely with Rev. Toll.

You may help us!

We invite caring, compassionate Christian men and women to join our prison ministry team. You should be willing to share your life experiences and faith journey with others in need. You will find this to be an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of prisoners at the Jefferson County Detention Center. If you would be interested in this meaningful ministry please contact Pastor Ross Kershaw.

VICTIM OFFENDER RECONCILIATION PROGRAM (VORP)

The Victim Offender Reconciliation Program (VORP) is an important part of Golden First UMC's Prison Ministry. The program trains volunteers to mediate face-to-face meetings between juvenile offenders and their victims. Youth mediators may play an important role in this process and are welcomed to train for this ministry.

Qualifications for becoming a volunteer mediator include:

  • The ability to listen and to put people at ease.
  • The capacity to remain unbiased. It is important to remain neutral and not take sides.
  • The ability to treat all parties with respect.
  • The desire to help others develop solutions to their problems.
  • The ability to keep information confidential.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • That you are age 16 or older.
