Rev. Henry C. Waltz served as pastor at Golden's Methodist-Episcopal
Church from July, 1872 through July, 1874. He was appointed by
Bishop Foster.4
Waltz's 1872-1873 salary was estimated at $1250 of which $300 came from
the Board of Missions. The total estimate was paid.4
Membership increased from 33 to 60 in Rev. Waltz's
first year, with an additional 15 'probationers'. Conference assessments
were paid in full in the amount of $75 for Missions and $15 for Church
Extension.4
"The Pastor with his own hands put a $400 addition to the parsonage, (2 rooms) raising most of the money for it by lectures. Besides this the lot was fenced in, a side-walk put down, and Hymn and Tune books and these Church Record books purchased." 4New members included the Bennetts (two), Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Burns, the Edwards family (four), A. C. Smith, R. H. Stewart, William White, and others.4 In February, 1874, a panic which had began in the East arrived in Golden. About one-third of the congregation moved to the country and elsewhere to better their conditions, yet they kept their memberships with the church.5 Later in the spring, a four week preaching mission formed a gracious spiritual revival for the church.5 Rev. Henry Waltz licensed two young men, Thomas P. Cook and John L. Moffitt, as Exhorters. These men were recommended for the License to Preach by the 4th Quarterly Conference and were later accepted into the Northern District Conference in May, 1874.5 New members in 1874 included Rev. P. I. Smith and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Stiekle, Mrs. Schlessinger, and Mr. and Mrs. S. M. French.5 The Pastor improved the church by personally digging a well that was 33 feet deep. Rev. Waltz's estimated salary of $1250 was paid to the amount of $1125. $65 was paid by the church to Missions and $10 to Church Extension.5 |
