Nearly 1000 delegates from 118 annual conferences attended the
United Methodist Church (UMC) 2000 General Conference, May 1-13,
in Cleveland, Ohio. Sixty-six of the 118 annual conferences are
from the United States, 17 from Africa, 18 from Europe, and 17
from the Philippines.
The primary business of the $3.3 million General Conference was to
process petitions filed by individuals, churches, conferences, and
agencies. These petitions were debated and amended by ten
legislative committees including Finance Administration, Higher
Education and Ministry, General/Judicial Administration, Faith
and Order, Church and Society, Conferences, Independent Commissions,
and Global Ministries.
Delegates made decision on many petitions including the
2001-2004 budget for the whole United Methodist Church, a new
apportionment formula, membership, Connectional Process Team
Proposal, various national plans on ethnic ministries, the
homosexuality issue, and others.
