This Methodist favorite has generally been the opening hymn in Methodist Hymnals since Charles Wesley's "Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists" (1780). Written by Wesley in 1739, 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing' commemorates Wesley's own conversion to Christianity on May 21, 1738. Interestingly, Wesley's original poem contained 18 stanza's although most have never been used as a hymn. Seven stanzas now make up 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing'. The first of these is actually the seventh in Wesley's poem. This now popular verse is thought to echo an expression often used by Peter Bohler:

"Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise him with them all!"

The above is the second stanza of one of Christianity's most beloved hymns- "Amazing Grace"! The author is Englishman John Newton, the captain of a slave-trading ship and a self-proclaimed "wretch". Newton wrote these inspiring words following the deliverance of his ship from a violent storm on May 10, 1748. The storm was so severe that Newton was sure his ship would sink and that all would be lost. The third stanza (below) well depicts Newton's reliance on God's grace:
